- El Instituto Oncológico de Fundación Arturo López Pérez (FALP) localizado en Santiago de Chile, exclusivo centro de cáncer con una alta especialización en América Latina, gracias a la tecnología que ha implementado brinda tratamientos avanzados para diferentes tipos de cánceres.
En el Perú se han registrado 1275 nuevos casos de cáncer ovario, y 786 casos de fallecimiento, según cifras de Globocan, es así que si bien, este tipo de cáncer ginecológico no es el más frecuente, sí es el más letal, ya que tiene la tasa de supervivencia más baja en proporción al número de casos que se registran.
El Dr. Sebastián Ramírez, cirujano oncoginecológico de FALP, señala que en cuanto a cánceres ginecológicos se refiere, los tumores del cuello uterino, debido a su mayor frecuencia y la posibilidad de detectarlos cuando aún son lesiones premalignas, pueden diagnosticarse de manera precoz. Sin embargo, resalta que en la vereda opuesta está el cáncer de ovario, una neoplasia del aparato reproductor femenino de perfil mucho más bajo y que cuesta encontrar a tiempo.
Solo en un 25% de las pacientes, el tumor se diagnostica cuando aún está confinado al ovario y/o la trompa de Falopio, mientras que en el resto de los casos ya se extendió a otros órganos de la pelvis y el abdomen, y una de las razones es la presencia de síntomas como dolor y distensión (hinchazón) abdominal, dolor pélvico, sensación de saciedad precoz con las comidas y, menos frecuentemente, constipación (estitiquez), náuseas y vómitos, que se confunden con los de otras enfermedades, especialmente de la esfera digestiva, llevando a un diagnóstico tardío, en etapas avanzadas.
“La gran mayoría de las pacientes tiene síntomas, lo que pasa es que son inespecíficos. Por eso, la recomendación es que cualquier mujer con molestias abdominales que son persistentes pese a un tratamiento adecuado, que aumentan progresivamente en intensidad y frecuencia, y/o que se inician a una edad inhabitual —por ejemplo, empezar con señales de colon irritable a los 60 años cuando nunca antes se ha sufrido de esto— debe tener una evaluación ginecológica”, afirma el especialista.
Precisamente, en el marco de esta fecha, el cirujano oncoginecológico de FALP, explica los principales tratamientos que existen para combatir esta patología:
- Cirugía: Es el principal tratamiento para el cáncer de ovario. Sus objetivos son determinar el estadio en que se encuentra el cáncer y reducir su tamaño a enfermedad no visible ni palpable. Como la enfermedad debuta habitualmente comprometiendo varios órganos en su superficie, es una cirugía compleja, que requiere centros de manejo avanzados de este tipo de tumores y equipos con alta experiencia en estas intervenciones.
- Quimioterapia: Consiste en la aplicación de droga. En la mayoría de los casos se administra endovenosa, pero en algunos casos también existe la opción de aplicarla, además, intraperitoneal (a través de un catéter en la cavidad abdominal). Según el tipo de cáncer y lo extendido que esté, se utiliza para eliminar la enfermedad mínima que pudiera quedar tras la operación o en ocasiones para reducir el tamaño del tumor antes de practicar la cirugía. Además, uno de los pilares de la quimioterapia es reducir el riesgo de que el cáncer reaparezca.
- Terapia dirigida: Estos nuevos medicamentos, diseñados para bloquear el crecimiento y propagación de células cancerosas, se utilizan principalmente en cánceres de ovario avanzados.
En esa línea, para los pacientes de Perú que busquen atenderse en FALP, es más accesible: “en primer lugar se contacta a la Representante en Perú, luego se llena un formulario y acopian los documentos sustento de los diagnósticos y tratamientos realizados para que luego se derive el caso a la Unidad Internacional en Chile. Ahí, el médico de la Unidad Internacional evalúa y emite un informe, con posibilidad de una consulta virtual con un especialista.
